Get the CELPIP score your PR application needs
304 Listening and Reading questions in the real test format, plus all Writing and Speaking tasks with the real timers and a model answer for each.
Practise by section
The CELPIP-General has six Listening parts and four Reading parts, each with its own kind of passage and questions. Practise one part at a time, or take a full Listening and Reading practice exam with one passage per part in the real order. Each part's pass mark is set at the CLB 7 level of the official score tables. Writing and Speaking tasks have the real timers and a model answer to compare with.
Listening Part 1: Listening to Problem Solving 32 questions
One conversation in three sections about a problem two people work out together. You answer three, three, then two questions after each section, so remember details, reasons and how the plan changes.
Listening Part 2: Listening to a Daily Life Conversation 20 questions
A short everyday conversation between friends, neighbours, family members or coworkers. Questions ask what they are talking about, why something happened, and what someone will probably do next.
Listening Part 3: Listening for Information 24 questions
A conversation in which one person gets information from another, such as an advisor, an agent or a coordinator. Questions check facts, reasons, steps and advice.
Listening Part 4: Listening to a News Item 20 questions
A local news report with a reporter and quoted people. Questions use sentence completion: what the story is about, what happened, what people should do and how someone feels.
Listening Part 5: Listening to a Discussion 32 questions
Three people discuss a decision and weigh options. Track who suggests what, who agrees or disagrees, their attitudes, and what they decide. The real test shows this part as a video; here you hear it over a picture of the scene that shows who is speaking.
Listening Part 6: Listening for Viewpoints 24 questions
A commentator presents several people's views on an issue. Questions ask the speaker's purpose, each person's position and reasons, and which views they would agree with.
Reading Part 1: Reading Correspondence 44 questions
A personal letter or email with six questions, then a reply with five blanks to fill. Tests the writer's purpose, details, tone and how the reply connects to the first message.
Reading Part 2: Reading to Apply a Diagram 32 questions
A diagram, schedule or table and an email about it with five blanks you fill from the diagram, then three questions about the email.
Reading Part 3: Reading for Information 36 questions
A passage in four paragraphs, A to D. For each of nine statements, choose the paragraph that has the information, or E if no paragraph does.
Reading Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints 40 questions
An article that presents several people's views, with five questions, then a reader's comment with five blanks to complete.
Writing Task 1: Writing an Email 10 tasks
Write an email of 150 to 200 words in 27 minutes, covering the three points the task lists. Formal or friendly, depending on who you are writing to.
Writing Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions 10 tasks
Choose Option A or B in a survey and explain why, in 150 to 200 words in 26 minutes. Clear reasons and examples score higher than covering both sides equally.

About the CELPIP exam
What CELPIP score do I need for Express Entry?
It depends on the program. Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 in all four skills, which means a CELPIP level of 7 in each. Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 (TEER 0 or 1 jobs) or CLB 5 (TEER 2 or 3). Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing.
Which CELPIP test do I need for citizenship?
Either CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS. You need level 4 or higher in listening and speaking, if you are 18 to 54. Only CELPIP-General is accepted for permanent residence.
How do CELPIP levels convert to CLB?
One to one from level 3 up: a CELPIP 8 in Reading is CLB 8 in Reading. IRCC looks at each skill separately, not at your average.
What is on the test?
Four components in one sitting of just under three hours. Listening has 6 parts and 38 questions (46 to 55 minutes). Reading has 4 parts and 38 questions (43 to 56 minutes). Writing has 2 tasks in 53 minutes: an email (27 minutes) and a survey response (26 minutes), 150 to 200 words each. Speaking has 8 tasks in about 15 minutes.
How are the practice exams scored?
Each Listening and Reading part is marked against the share of questions that matches CLB 7 in the official score tables (27 of 38 in Listening, 24 of 38 in Reading). The real test also weighs how hard each question is, so treat your practice score as a guide, not a predicted level. Writing and Speaking come with a model answer to compare your response with.
Is this official CELPIP material?
No. This is an independent practice site. All practice questions, scripts and model answers here are original and follow the published format of the CELPIP-General test, but they are not official CELPIP test material. CELPIP is a registered trademark of Paragon Testing Enterprises.
